New Fire Protection Project to be Dedicated
July 30, 2007
Continued dry weather has cause water levels in farm ponds and small streams to drop substantially. During drought conditions, firefighters cannot rely upon such sources of water to battle blazes. That is why the Board of County Commissioners launched an initiative to establish regional underground fire protection tanks for the county’s volunteer fire companies to use. Commissioners will dedicate Carroll’s latest regional fire protection tank during a demonstration at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 8. Firefighters from the Pleasant Valley Volunteer Fire Company & surrounding fire departments can utilize the 30,000-gallon fiberglass tank on Cherrytown Road to battle blazes in and around Silver Run. Tanks Direct of Beltsville completed the project, which included removal of an existing concrete basin, installation of the new tank, and construction of an access road, at a cost of $114,535.00.
During the dedication, members of the Pleasant Valley Volunteer Fire Company will demonstrate how an engine connects to the tank to access water. Representatives of the Carroll County Volunteer Emergency Services Association and the Regional Fire Protection Committee have been invited to join the Board of County Commissioners for the event.
Directions to the site: From Westminster, take Route 97 North. Turn right onto Cherrytown Road. The site is located on your left, approximately ¼ mile off of Route 97.
